Spring Equinox – The First Day of Spring

Friday, 20th of March is when the Spring Equinox will occur in the UK to welcome in the first day of spring, 2020.  In other parts of the Northern Hemisphere, depending on where you live, it will occur on the 19th of March or the 21st. This year will be the earliest astronomical Vernal Equinox in 124 years.  The last time spring arrived early was in 1896.

The spring equinox usually falls between March 20th, 21st or 22nd, when the Sun stands directly above the equator making day and night appear to be of equal length.  This marks the first day of spring when the days start to get warmer and longer as the Northern Hemisphere tilts towards the Sun.

The astronomical equinox is different to the meteorological first day of spring, which falls on the 1st of March, because it is based on the calendar cycle rather than the position of Earth`s orbit in relation to the sun.

The first day of spring is a time for many gardeners to get out into the garden and start sowing seeds as the ground warms up and planting bulbs and cuttings.  With longer day-light hours and shorter nights, our garden plants burst into life as they feed on the sunlight and convert light energy into nutrients such as carbohydrates and sugars.

Now is the perfect time to get out and revamp the vegetable garden, prepare the beds and borders for sensational spring and summer flower displays and mow the lawn ready for long summer days relaxing in the garden.

The wildlife is also joyfully preparing for the warmer weather and abundant food as the plants grow and provide a bounty of delights after the winter months.  Birds are nesting now and are busy foraging for the perfect nesting materials our gardens have to offer.  Keep putting out bird food for them to supplement their natural diet.

Spring is an exciting time for gardeners.  After a long winter of planning, we can finally get out into the garden and sculpt our visions into reality.  Early spring mornings are the perfect time to potter around the garden enjoying the fresh morning air.
