Mediterranean Statement Plants

Canasta is commonly referred to as the Canna lily. This tropical perennial exhibit broad flat leaves which unfurl from narrow rolls to create a stunning backdrop in the garden.  The leaves are generally a vibrant green however, some variations have been cultivated to have brown, striped or maroon leaves.  The showy flowers flourish in a variation of red, orange, yellow or pink colours.  Cannas can be planted in borders or in containers for the patio.  They perform best in semi to full shade making them ideal for shaded areas and filling out borders. Grown from rhizomes and cultivated to tolerate cooler climates, over wintering in milder areas the rhizomes can be left in the ground with mulch cover for protection.  In colder areas the plants can be lifted out and stored in a dry warm area.

Add a glamorous Mediterranean feel to your garden with the showy Yellow trumpet vine.  Bursting with colour in a variety of yellow, red or orange flowers all through the summer.  Patio camsis ` yellow trumpet` is the perfect exotic climbing plant with a profusion of vivid yellow flowers.  Vigorous and fast growing on shiny green foliage, the Patio camsis is a magnet to butterflies and bees.  It is a hardy plant with few pests or diseases and heat, cold and drought tolerant.  Ideal for growing on patios or trellis, the trumpet vine will add a touch of the Mediterranean to your garden.  Blooming from early to late summer and planted in a full to partial sun area makes this an excellent choice for walls, fences and trellis.

The Bottlebrush is an eye-catching beautiful evergreen with an explosion of red/pink brush blooms which tower over many other bedding plants.  Callistemon thrive well in pots on the patio and will reward you with stunning flowers when sited in a full to partial sun area.  The bottlebrush really is a statement plant that will add a touch of Mediterranean style to your garden.  Pollinators are attracted to the nectar rich blooms and the foliage has a lemon-citrus aroma that will deliver a refreshing scent into the air.  This hardy plant is drought tolerant and can survive winters in the garden well with a little care and cover.
